I already installed RedSwoosh and when I try to "swoosh" a link like this one: http://www.mofunzone.com/download_games/thief_deadly_shadows.shtml it takes me back to the main page and says the file is available on P2P. But I already downloaded it, and the program is not blocked nor does it interfer with pop-ups. I am a user of aol and does this has anything to do with it?

Hm, that's interesting. First, are you swooshing the HTML page:

    http://www.mofunzone.com/download_games/thief_deadly_shadows.shtml

Or the actual download link itself?

    http://ftp.eidos.com/pub/demos/thief3/T3_Demo.exe

If you do the first, then we'll correctly swoosh the HTML page, but then all you see is HTML fed from our P2P network -- the HTML file itself is so small it's not really worth the effort. What you *would* do is swoosh the EXE link, as follows:

    http://edn.redswoosh.net/ftp.eidos.com/pub/demos/thief3/T3_Demo.exe

However, Eidos is hosting the file on a FTP server, and we only support HTTP at the moment. Thus even were you to swoosh the link correctly, it still wouldn't work. I'll put support for FTP sources on our to-do list, but in the meantime please don't hesistate to use swoosh on any HTTP link.

  1.
I am getting the same problem. Except when I click on this link and the RSinstall file begins to install it tells me that it can not connect to my server. But I have the file installed. There are two files I believe. One is an older one that you can download from the micro downloader and the newer one which is on the page that is supposed to link you to your original download exe file after it is installed. I have tried both. The older one installs and doesn't do anything afterward and the newer one gives me the error message. I am not sure what specifications I am supposed to have? Am I supposed to have a specific connection in order to use this program? I am trying to download the new Microsoft Office 2007 beta 2.

The Windows file is no longer available.

Try going to http://redswoosh.pbwiki.com/SampleSwooshedLinks - click on those links and let us know what happens.

    Thanks,

    Travis,
I also faced this problem. What is happening is...
I am connected to net via DSL. My system goes to sleep mode when I am not using for some time. Next time when I come to the machine, the net connection is activated, but RedSwoosh client is stuck without connecting. It saying "Going Online", but remains like that. I had to stop and start again to make it work.

Interesting. How long did it remain in the "Going Online" state after coming out of sleep? Also, does this happen every time, or did this happen just once?

It *should* connect within seconds, but clearly something is amiss. Can you send your 'C:\Program Files\RSSoft\guid.ini' file to '[email protected]' so I can look into what our servers have to say?

Hi Vlad, I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. To help us diagnose the problem:

    1) Send us the file “C:\Program Files\RSSoft\guid.ini”

    2) Send us a link to the page containing the swooshed link you are clicking

    3) Verify your browser has cookies and JavaScript enabled

Please send us the information in (1) and (2), and let us know if enabling cookies or JavaScript in (3) helps. Thanks!

    (Following up to Vlad's reply)

Vlad, thanks for the GUID. Just to confirm something, you mentioned:

    3) my java is always enabled and my browser has cookies (100% sure)

Can you confirm that your JavaScript is always also enabled? This is different than Java.

Fundamentally, it seems that something is preventing JavaScript in your web browser from detecting our client. This will fool the install page into thinking that the client is not installed, prompting you to endlessly reinstall it. With this in mind, will you please do as much as you can of the following:

    1) Verify that the ‘redswoosh.exe’ client is running.

    2) Visit http://www.redswoosh.net/sdk/usr/samples/helloworld.html and tell me if it says initialization “succeeds” or “fails”. I’m guessing it’ll say “failed”, and this will help confirm it’s a problem with JavaScript talking to the client over ‘localhost’.

    3) Visit http://www.redswoosh.net/sdk/usr/samples/redswoosh_scanner.html and tell me if rs_attributes[rs_isOnline] is set to ‘true’. If (2) fails, this probably won’t work either. But if (2) succeeds, this’ll indicate the state of the client, specifically whether or not it’s connected to our servers.

    4) Verify that a cookie named “EDNID” has been set on the “redswoosh.net” domain, and that it contains the value (omitted). This is your client’s unique identifier; without this cookie set, our servers will assume the Red Swoosh client is not installed.

    5) Visit www.redswoosh.net and tell me if there is a static image in the upper right saying “Developer Tools / Javascript API”, or if it immediately fades out and switches to red image saying “It’s weird but it’s swooshed!” linking to our Ask A Ninja clip. This’ll verify that JavaScript is enabled and working for internet websites.

    6) Anytime after 3AM PST Monday morning, click the red “It’s weird but it’s swooshed” link on the www.redswoosh.net homepage. This’ll link to our Ask A Ninja video; please let me know if it takes you right back to the installer and does the same thing. Whether it works or not, I’ve enabled additional logging on your GUID that I hope will shed light on the subject.

    7) Are you using Internet Explorer or FireFox? Can you please try the same exercise using the other browser (if using IE, try FireFox and vice versa)?

    8) And if all this doesn’t work, can you uninstall the Red Swoosh client, click on the FileFactory link, and try it from scratch? Perhaps something got screwed up in your particular installation that a simple reinstall will fix. (However, let’s avoid doing this if possible so we can diagnose and resolve the real problem.)

Thanks for your help in tracking down this issue. We’re eager to get to the bottom of the problem.

I also am getting the "program running" message, but can't get any further. Can't find it in my program files list, can't install. Does this report explain anything. I'm lost about how to proceed or how to interpret this information.

Greatday -- Thanks for the report. Here's how to read it:

    - Because 'redswooshInitialize' succeeded, we know the client is running. Look for the process named "RedSwoosh.exe" or "RSEDNClient.exe".

    - rs_goonline is set to 'true', meaning it is trying to go online

    - rs_isonline is set to 'true' meaning that it is actually connected to our servers successfully

    - rs_fileAttributes shows that you were able to successfully download the "AskANinja" clip

So the client is clearly running and connected. What specific problem are you having? Like Vlad, do you get redirected to the install page every time you click a Swooshed link? To help me diagnose the problem, please answer:

    1) What web browser and version are you using (IE 6 or 7, FireFox 1.8 or 2.0)?

    2) What happens when you click on: http://edn.redswoosh.net/www.redswoosh.net/AskANinja.wmv

    3) Do you have JavaScript and cookies enabled?

    4) What is contained in the EDNID cookie on the 'redswoosh.net' domain? (Tools::Options:Privacy::Show Cookies, search redswoosh.net. Should contain 7399c556156c46d6b7b6c1745f9c710e)

    5) Do you have any plugins or AddOns installed into your web browser? Are you running any antivirus or antispyware software?

Basically, the client is running, and it successfully downloaded a file for you once. It's connected to our servers, and it's responding to the test page just fine. Thus the remaining question is why it's no responding correctly to the install page (that is, if you are experiencing the same problem as Vlad).

Thanks for your help, Greatday, and I look forward to your answers.

    -david

I'll give you the answers to your questions, but, unless i'm really out to lunch, i have no "client". I find no reference to Redswoosh in my program files or anywhere else---except cookies....
    1. Firefox 2.0 & IE6
    2. It takes me to Windows Media Player and plays an obnoxious, way too long (30sec.) video and the WMP screen goes blank when it's done.
    3. Yes
    4. Those are the numbers shown for the cookie (and the only reference on my computer, that i've found, to Redswoosh)
    5. I have AdBlock Plus, AI Roboform, Flashblock 1.52 (which asks me for permission if it's blocking anything), IE View, Snagit, Tabbrowser preferences, Talkback, TrackMe Not (which is currently turned off), Unplug, Update Notifier, and Video Downloader as Add-ons in Firefox. I run Norton Anti Virus and SpywareGuard (neither of which has produced any warnings about RS).

Am I wrong to expect to find a "client" that i should be able to click on to open a program? Am i not grasping the concept?

Thanx for running thru this with me.

Ahh, perhaps that's the issue. The Red Swoosh client operates in the background, like a web browser plugin. We intentionally don't get in your face like other P2P applications because our job is to just move bits behind the scenes. We want our customers to keep control over the user experience, and we just do the heavy lifting.

Thus the video that you were downloading -- even though it looked like it came direct from our webserver -- actually came through our P2P client. To confirm this, check out the Red Swoosh control panel (located alongside the rest of your normal control panels). You should see our (obnoxious) test video listed there as proof that it downloaded it.

    Does this make sense?

OK.....some light is starting to come thru this heavily fogged brain......I found it under Control Panel on Start........but surely i don't have to dig in there every time i want to use this. Do i need to bookmark something in my browser? Is there no button or icon to pin to the page that will take me there, or how do i inititiate the process to begin with? Must i type in the redswoosh address ahead of every link, every time??? Sorry, now i can't see the forest for the wood.....

Perhaps the disconnect is in lumping Red Swoosh with other P2P download tools. For example, the typical way you'd use Kazaa, Limewire or others is:

    1) You have a large file you want to share with others
    2) You put that file in the "My Shared Files" folder for Kazaa
    3) You start Kazaa and it scans that folder and advertises it to peers
    4) Users start Kazaa and do a search for your file within the Kazaa interface
    5) Kazaa shows your file in its search list
    6) They choose it for download inside the Kazaa interface
    7) Kazaa downloads it to their "My Shared Files" folder

These tools provide a self-contained publishing, searching, and downloading interface that is entirely unrelated to Internet Explorer, FireFox, webservers, or the web at all. They are "walled gardens" for people with content to share and get content from others using non-HTTP, non-web protocols.

Red Swoosh works in a very different way: it's for publishers to quickly and efficiently download content to users at very low cost. The typical use of Red Swoosh is:

    1) You have a large file you want to deliver to a lot of people (eg, AskANinja.wmv)
    2) You post the file to a standard webserver, and make it available via some standard URL (eg: http://www.redswoosh.net/AskANinja.wmv)
    3) You "swoosh" the link by prepending "http://edn.redswoosh.net" (eg, http://edn.redswoosh.net/www.redswoosh.net/AskANinja.wmv)
    4) You post the "swooshed" link somewhere were users will find it (eg, http://www.redswoosh.net)
    5) Users click on the swooshed link with a standard web browser
    6) Red Swoosh does its magic in the background
    7) Users download the content via their standard web browser, just as if Red Swoosh weren't there

Red Swoosh serves as a transparent middleman that sits between your web browser and the web server, silently intercepting "swooshed links" and downloading from a P2P network instead of directly from the webserver. To the publisher, it's just like posting a normal file to a normal webserver, except cheaper. To the end user, it looks just like the content is coming from the webserver, except faster.

Basically, as a user, you needn't be concerned with the details of Red Swoosh -- just use the web as you are accustomed to doing, and pay no attention to us.

    Does this make sense?

PS: For the purposes of brevity, I'm talking exclusively about the "swooshed link" feature. We have other features that are really cool, including JSAPI, predelivery, RSS and so on. But let's worry about those once you're comfortable with swooshed links.
